The animals represented are both recognizable as animals and yet given expressive, human facial expressions and mannerisms which make them relatable without turning creepy.
James’ beautiful illustrations are a highlight of the book, filled with clean lines, whimsical characters, and rich, vivid color usage. Notably, human characters only appear within the series viewed from a distance as part of the setting. Each book within the series presents such an aspect of moral growth and learning using anthropomorphized animal, insect, or fantasy creatures as vehicles for teaching the lessons presented. Maui-Maui is a classic, low fantasy picture book for preschool and elementary school aged children from Cosgrove’s Serendipity book series, which teaches readers about ocean conservation and the responsible use of resources.
